Post-Procedure Guidance and Red Flag Symptoms

After microsuction you will receive verbal and written aftercare instructions tailored to your clinical findings. Common sensations include temporary increased hearing, fullness or mild ear discomfort, which usually settles within 24 to 48 hours. Follow instructions about avoiding water ingress to the ear until advised, and do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the ear canal. Contact the clinic or your GP promptly if you notice persistent severe pain, bleeding, sudden significant hearing loss, or continuous fluid discharge, as these can indicate complications needing further assessment. If your clinician suspects an infection or perforation, they will recommend GP review or ENT referral and advise on interim management to reduce risk of harm.

Routine follow up is not always required after successful wax removal, but the clinician will advise a timetable if you have recurrent impaction, underlying dermatitis, or hearing aid use that predisposes to wax build up. If recurrent wax is a problem, discuss preventive measures such as periodic professional maintenance, ear canal moisturising drops where appropriate, and regular audiology checks to monitor hearing thresholds.

• Expect some transient noise sensitivity or fullness for a short period after microsuction, these symptoms usually resolve without intervention within a few days.
• If bleeding occurs at the time of treatment, simple pressure and clinic advice are usually adequate, but persistent bleeding requires immediate GP or emergency care.
• Report any new dizziness, vertigo or worsening tinnitus after the procedure, these signs may indicate inner ear involvement and need timely assessment.
• For recurrent wax build up, arrange maintenance appointments as advised by the clinician to reduce the chance of repeated blockages affecting daily function.
• If you belong to a high risk medical group, such as those with immunosuppression or complex ear history, coordinate aftercare with your GP for optimal monitoring and safety.
